Marmaris Travel Guide

A pine-fringed bay, a lively marina, boat trips to hidden coves and quiet peninsula villages

Marmaris lies in a deep, sheltered bay where pine-covered mountains run down to the sea. It is one of Turkey’s best-loved beach resorts, with a long promenade, a busy marina and a small Ottoman castle above the old town. Beyond the town, the rugged Bozburun and Datça peninsulas hide fishing villages and clear coves that are best reached by boat.

Why go to Marmaris

  • Beach and boats: a long town beach plus endless boat trips to bays that can only be reached from the sea.
  • Lively or peaceful: the marina and bar street are busy at night, while İçmeler, Turunç and the peninsula villages are calm.
  • A sailing base: Marmaris is one of the main starting points for gulet and yacht holidays on the Aegean and Mediterranean.

Top things to do

  • Marmaris Castle and the old town: a small castle with a museum and views over the marina, surrounded by narrow lanes and old houses.
  • The promenade and marina: walk along the seafront from the town beach to the yacht harbour, with cafés and restaurants all the way.
  • İçmeler and Turunç: smaller resorts along the bay, reached by water taxi or a coastal walk.
  • The Bozburun peninsula: drive or sail to Bozburun, Selimiye and Söğüt for quiet bays and fish restaurants by the water.
  • Cleopatra Island (Sedir Island): a day trip to the Gulf of Gökova to swim at the island’s famous beach. The beach is protected, so follow the rules on site.
  • A day in Rhodes: in season, ferries cross from Marmaris to the Greek island of Rhodes.

Boat trips and tours

  • Daily boat trips: wooden boats leave the harbour every morning in summer for swimming stops in the bays and caves around Marmaris.
  • Gulets and yacht charter: Marmaris is a classic base for week-long gulet cruises and bareboat or crewed yacht charters.
  • Day tours: Dalyan’s turtles and mud baths, jeep safaris into the hills, and diving trips for beginners and experienced divers.

Getting there and around

  • Dalaman Airport: about 90 km away, roughly an hour and a half by road. Bodrum Airport is another option.
  • Private transfers: the most comfortable way to reach your hotel, especially with children.
  • Getting around: dolmuş minibuses and water taxis link Marmaris with İçmeler and Turunç; a hire car is best for the peninsulas.
